Wildlife

Elk in the Meadow in Spring

The above picture shows what is probably part of the Oak Brush Hill National Forest resident herd, although other herds do migrate through in the fall and spring.

Late winter elk grazing on south slopes across the street from the property. They have probably come from the meadows behind and below the house and will return come nightfall.

A bull elk and two mule deer. Picture taken near the jeep road leading down into the meadow.

A buck mule deer in velvet followed by a doe. Picture taken from driveway.

Picture of Mule Deer Stag in full antlers taken in early morning from a south window of the house.

Abert Squirrel raiding bird feeder.

Turkey Cock displaying for some young hens. Taken from the Great Room window

A flock of turkeys just off the back deck of the house.

Taken from the windows in the Master Bedroom.

Elk are among the many wildlife species seen on the property.  Others include Mule Deer, Black Bear, Bobcat, Mountain Lion, Coyote, Porcupine, Abert's Squirrel, Red Squirrel, Chipmunk, Cottontail Rabbit and Turkey.

An evaluation of the property by the Colorado State Forest Service in 1992 found the following:  "Wildlife species include Elk, Mule Deer, Black Bear, Mountain Lion, Coyote, Porcupine, Abert's Squirrel, Red Squirrel, Chipmunk, Cottontail Rabbit, Turkey, Blue Grouse, Waterfowl, Golden Eagle and various species of birds and small mammals.  Deer and Elk appear to use the dense Douglas-fir forests for bedding purposes, .... as well as for cover and travel corridors.  The abundance and availability of shrubs within the mixed Conifer forests provide both food and cover to a variety of wildlife.  Depending on the species, use of the property for habitat is often determined by the season of the year.  Some deer and elk generally use the property throughout the year but the highest concentrations of these animals occur during migrations between summer and winter ranges."
