Elk are among the many
wildlife species seen on the property. Others include Mule
Deer, Black Bear, Bobcat, Mountain Lion, Coyote, Porcupine,
Abert's Squirrel, Red Squirrel, Chipmunk, Cottontail
Rabbit and Turkey.
An
evaluation of the property by the Colorado State Forest
Service in 1992 found the following: "Wildlife species
include Elk, Mule Deer, Black Bear, Mountain Lion,
Coyote, Porcupine, Abert's Squirrel, Red Squirrel,
Chipmunk, Cottontail Rabbit, Turkey, Blue Grouse,
Waterfowl, Golden Eagle and various species of birds and
small mammals. Deer and Elk appear to use the dense
Douglas-fir forests for bedding purposes, .... as well
as for cover and travel corridors. The abundance and
availability of shrubs within the mixed Conifer forests
provide both food and cover to a variety of wildlife.
Depending on the species, use of the property for
habitat is often determined by the season of the year.
Some deer and elk generally use the property throughout
the year but the highest concentrations of these animals
occur during migrations between summer and winter
ranges." |
